Description

YORK SE6051NW ST MARTIN'S LANE 1112-1/28/948 (West side) 08/03/93 No.12 II Warehouse; now flats. c1700, with early C18 and C19 extensions; partial demolition and alteration for conversion to flats in 1994. MATERIALS: original part and early C18 extension of orange-red brick in English garden wall bond; C19 wing of pink and cream mottled brick in stretcher bond; C20 rebuild in orange-cream brick in English garden wall bond and ground floor of right return lined render; pantile roofs with tumbled brick gables. PLAN: L-shaped with main range and wing to left; wing to right added. EXTERIOR: 2-storey 3-bay front to main range with 2-storey gabled wings projecting forward at each side. Main range has plain board door in centre: on each side are 2-light casement windows on both floors. Left wing has one similar window on each floor of gable end: right wing has no windows in gable end but one window on each floor of left return. Left return: 2 storey gable wall with attic to left of 2-storey wing: two inserted 2-light windows on both floors of gable wall and blocked window in gable end. Right return: 2-storey gable wall with attic to right of 2-storey wing. On ground floor are two 2-light windows with incised arches; on first floor, similar windows flank central blocked window with shallow segmental arch of brick. Similarly arched blocked window in gable end. Rendered band of 2 raised brick courses at first floor level. Unless indicated otherwise, all windows are casements and have brick sills and cambered brick arches. INTERIOR: extensive interconnecting brick vaulted cellars run beneath main range and wing to left. First floor carried on massive joists retained in conversion. Building is the earliest surviving structure associated with the once prosperous port of York.
