Description

EXCAVATION Behind Gray's Court immediately SE of the NE gate. Excavated in 1927 by SN Miller. "The Roman wall was found immediately below the beding of the medieval city wall, but only the foundation and two courses of the inner face in dressed stone stone survived. The foundation was of concrete set in a trench and had an inward projection of 1ft. The wall was the Severan wall and in the nature of the case there was no evidence that a 4th-century wall had ever replaced it. Remains of the clay bank existed below foundation level."
