Description

In October 1999 York Archaeological Trust observed the removal of an old floor and the lowering of the ground below in order to put in a new floor slab at 98 Micklegate, York. Also observed were the trenches for new drains within the building and the excavation of two engineers test pits. Below the centre of the floor being removed was a backfilled cellar which was not dug out but probably penetrated up to c.2m below the present modern ground level. North-west and southeast of this cellar probable build-up deposits were observed which may have belonged to the post-medieval period or possibly to the medieval period. No definite features or structural remains, other than those associated with the present building, were noted and no occupation deposits were seen.
