Description

In 1987 three trenches were dug ahead of redevelopment at 19-29 Bishophill Senior. Trench 1 encounted natural clay at 2.2m bgl (14.10m AOD) beneath dark loam which contained no finds other than tiles. This was interpreted as either a gradual accumulation of material or dumping as part of Roman terracing of the slope. Trench 2 and 3 did not reach natural and were stopped at 13.29m AOD and 12.38m AOD respectively. The upper 1.2-1.5m of these trenches were rubble fill situated on top of the dark loam. The loam was interpreted again as make-up for the Roman terrace (Arch of York 4/2.
