Summary

A house dating from the early 19th century, with a late 19th century extension to the rear added whrn the building was converted into a shop. The building was renovated and a new shop window inserted in the late 20th century.

Full Description

House, now shop. Early C19, altered and extended at rear in late C19; renovated with new shop window in late C20. Orange-grey brick in Flemish bond; timber cornice; brick stacks to pantile roof.

EXTERIOR: 3-storey 2-window front. Shopfront of 3 arcaded plate glass lights incorporating door at right end and round passage arch on shaped imposts further right. First floor has 16-pane sashes, second floor 6-pane casement windows, all with painted sills and flat arches of orange gauged brick. Moulded and modillioned eaves cornice.

INTERIOR: cantilevered dogleg staircase has lower flights of stone treads with concave undersides: upper flights are wooden. Cast-iron balusters are square section, hollow sided on lower flights; handrail ramped up and wreathed at foot on shaped curtail step. In first floor front room, hemi-domed niches flank chimney breast.

(461) House, No. 32, of two bays and three storeys in brick, was built in the early 19th century. It is one room deep with a staircase set transversely at the rear. The ground floor was converted to shop premisis in the late 19th century and an extension built to the rear. The street elevation, in Flemish-bonded brickwork, has two sash windows to the first floor, with flat arches of guaged brick, flush moulded frames and stone sills. Two smaller windows above have had the sashes replaced by modern casements. There is a moulded and modillioned eaves cornice. Internally, the cantilevered staircase has simple cast-iron balusters with a mahogany handrail, stone treads to the two flights form the ground to first floor, and wooden treads above.
