Includes: No.53 LOW PETERGATE. Printing works. No.7 Grape Lane c1600, raised and incorporated into No.53 Low Petergate in early C19; refronted in C20. No.53 Low Petergate early C19, partly rebuilt and extended later in C19. No.7 Grape Lane is timber-framed, fronted in orange-cream brick in Flemish bond; roof not visible. No.53 Low Petergate of orange-grey brick in Flemish and English garden-wall bonds, part rendered; roofs of slate and pantile. EXTERIOR: No.7 Grape Lane: 3-storey 1-window front. C20 4-panel doors flank bowed small-pane shop window over brick riser. Left door leads to rear access passage. Oriel window on first floor and tripartite window on second floor both have 12-pane centre sashes. Second floor window has flat arch of orange soldier bricks. Prominent moulded timber cornice. Left return: first floor jetty over side passage now largely boxed in. No.53 Low Petergate in former Morley's Yard: 2-storey 4-window range abuts No.55 Low Petergate (qv): attached taller 2-storey block at rear of yard. 2-storey range has doorcase of attached reeded elliptical columns, frieze with shaped fascia panel and rebated end blocks, and moulded cornice: door is of 6 raised and fielded panels. To left is round-arched radial-glazed and panelled door. To right, ground floor windows are one small 4-pane sash, 16-pane sash with cambered brick arch and 15-pane fixed light. First floor windows are all 12-pane sashes, those to right with 1-course cambered brick arches. Taller block has glazed and panelled door with 12-pane overlight in canted corner, and 12-pane sash window above. Yard front windows are tripled 12/12-pane pivoting lights on ground floor, and similar windows with 8/12-pane lights on first floor. INTERIOR: No.7 Grape Lane has early C18 staircase with turned balusters and moulded handrail; timber-framed cross wall exposed in first floor front room. There has been a printing works on the site of No.53 Low Petergate since mid C18. No.7 Grape Lane is a new addition to the list. (City of York: RCHME: The Central Area: HMSO: 1981-: 146; 194).
