Description

YORK SE6051SE GEORGE STREET 1112-1/22/365 (West side (off)) Turpin's grave approx 50m from entrance to St George's churchyard II Headstone. Early C20. To Dick Turpin. Stone. Roughly dressed monolith approximately 0.6m. high with elliptical head and painted and incised lettering. Inscription reads: "John Palmer otherwise Richard Turpin. The notorious highwayman and horse stealer executed at Tyburn April 7th 1739 and buried in St George's Churchyard". Included for historic interest.
