Description

YORK SE5952NE CLIFTON 1112-1/7/200 (North East side) 14/06/54 The Burton Stone adjacent to The Burton Stone Inn GV II Cross base. Medieval. Stone. In addition to the central hole for a cross-shaft there are 4 cup-like depressions in the upper face which suggest use in time of plague as a barter stone. Stands at the front of the Burton Stone Inn (qv) enclosed by a wall. (An Inventory of the Historical Monuments in the City of York: RCHME: Outside the City Walls East of the Ouse: London: 1975-: 54).
