Description

YORK SE5952SE BOOTHAM TERRACE 1112-1/12/107 (North West side) No.8 and attached railings GV II House, now offices and flats. 1865. Brick with some painted stone or stucco dressings. Slate roof. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys with basement and attic. 2 bays. The 1st and 2nd floor windows are glazing bar sashes, and there is a 1st floor sill band. At the left on the ground floor there is a canted bay window with a modillion cornice. The front light is sashed with 3 over 3 panes, and the side lights are sashed without glazing bars. The basement window has casements with glazing bars. The attic dormer is gabled. The doorway, to the right, has external stone steps, and a doorcase which has pilasters with sunken panels, a modillion cornice, and panelled reveals. The door is glazed above 2 panels and has an overlight with 3 narrow red panes and 2 square panes. INTERIOR: not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: the area railings have spear head finials and are supported by low brick walls with stone copings. The iron gate remains. Nos 1-22 Bootham Terrace form an unusually complete row of speculatively built terraced houses, constructed between 1860 and 1870 to an interesting variety of different designs.
