                    KEXBY                     HULL ROAD Al079 SE 75 SW                                              (north side) 3/80                                         Church of Saint Paul -                                            II Church.  1852.  By F.C. Penrose for Lord Wenlock.  Sandstone ashlar with red plain tile roof.  Gothic Revival, late C13 - early C14 style.  3-bay nave with octagonal north-west tower and west porch, north vestry, single-bay chancel.  3-stage tower: plinth.  Square on plan tapering to octagonal shaft and spire.  Lancet and slit windows.  1st and 2nd stage string courses.  3rd stage has a cusped bell opening to each side.  Gargoyles.  Quatrefoil band. Spire surmounted by lead weathervane.  West entrance a pointed plank doorway in chamfered surround under gabled porch with naturalistically-carved brackets.  Above a 2-light window with reticulated-style tracery to head under hoodmould.  Nave: chamfered plinth.  South side has 3 2-light windows with trefoil heads under hoodmoulds.  North side: plinth.  Vestry to 1st bay has 2 trefoiled lancets.  Nave has two trefoiled lancets.  Chancel.  Plinth. Trefoiled lancet to South facade.  East window has 3 lights and reticulated tracery to head under hoodmould.  Interior: hammer-beam roof to nave, panelled ceiling to chancel.  Double-chamfered chancel arch with keeled responds.  Double-chamfered 2-bay arcade between nave and vestry with cylindrical pier.  Octagonal font.  Pevsner, N., Yorkshire: York and The East Riding, 1978, p.291.
