Description
                    NORTH YORKSHIRE SELBY                     ELVINGTON                 B1228 5342 SE 74 NW                                               (south side) 7/22                                          Elvington Hall -                                             II * House.  Elizabethan origins with later alterations and additions including those of mid - late C18 with wing of c.1920.  C18 additions reputedly by John Carr.  Reddish-orange brick in Flemish bond, and pinkish-brown brick in English garden wall bond with red brick and ashlar dressings and Welsh slate roof.  Garden front (the C18 part): 2 storeys, 3 bays with C20 2-storey, 2- bay addition to right and further 2-lower-storey, 3-bay service wing. Originally central entrance a C20 glazed door under fanlight with radial glazing bars with probably early C19 doorcase of pilasters supporting frieze, dentil cornice and open dentil pediment, within round-arched recess of red gauged brick.  Outer bays are canted to full height.  12-pane sashes throughout under flat arches of red gauged brick with continuous sill bands. Dentil frieze.  Hipped roof with separate roofs to bays.  Cast iron rainwaterheads.  C20 additions a single and a canted bay continue in similar style.  Service wing has tripartite 12-pane and 12-pane sashes.  End and ridge stacks.  Entrance to rear a 6-panel double door in Corinthian doorcase with dentil frieze and pediment.  Interior: C18 features include neo- classical cornice, frieze, fireplace window and door mouldings to ground and first floor rooms of left-hand bay.  Hall and lobby have modillion cornice. Late C18 / early C19 fireplace to dining room brought from elsewhere. Openwell staircase has column on vase balusters, 2 per tread, installed c1920.  6-panel doors.
