Description

UPPER POPPLETON SE 55 SE HODGSON LANE 1474/6/10010 (Northwest side) 12-JAN-01 All Saints Church GV II Parish church. 1891 designed by Charles Hodgson Fowler, including C13 fragments, 1959-72 altered by G G Pace. Two cell church with small square tower to west. Coursed dressed stone with ashlar dressings and plain tile roofs. Chamfered plinth and quoins. West front has single 2-light chamfered and pointed arch window with ornate tracery and moulded hood, between two stone buttresses. Upper section of gable flush with west wall of square tower, with triple lancet bell-opening to each face and short square wooden spire with plain tile roof and metal cross finial. South front has projecting gabled porch to left with pointed arched outer opening and inner doorway with re-used round headed Norman archway with C19 shafts and jambs. Pair of 2-panel doors. To right two 2-light pointed arch windows in chamfered surrounds with ornate tracery and hood moulds. Chancel has two flat headed 2-light windows with tracery hood moulds and linking cill band. East front has single 3-light pointed arch window with ornate tracery, hood mould and stepped cill band. North front has chequered stone walling has single 2-light pointed arch window with tracery and hood mould to nave. To left projecting vestry under lean-to roof. Vestry links to church hall added by G G Pace c.1964. INTERIOR has triple arched arcade to west end supporting square tower above. Bold wooden nave roof with alternating trusses, broad double-chamfered chancel arch and wooden roof to chancel with arched braces. Late C19 wooden pews; choir stalls, altar rail and altar added by G G Pace c. 1965. C13 stone font with simple bowl supported on octagonal stone stem. Listing NGR: SE5554654043
