SE 6155 SW NEW EARSWICK POPLAR GROVE (east side) 12/48 Nos 10-16 (even) GV II Terrace. 1902-1905. By Parker and Unwin, for Joseph Rowntree Village Trust. Brick and French tile. 2 pairs of cottages with through living room plan. 2 storeys, 6 first-floor windows with wide central gable. Original half-glazed double doors and standard "New Earswick" window panes throughout. Each house has door beneath fanlight flanked by 2-light casement and replacement fixed window in altered opening, formerly the entrance to the W C. First floor: 3-light casements to centre and pairs of low 3-light casements to outer bays. Stacks removed. The particular significance of New Earswick lies in its contribution to the development of low cost housing in Britain. Experience gained and practices introduced here were incorporated extensively into the Tudor Walters Report of 1918 which was instrumental in the passing of the Addison Act of 1919. Plans from New Earswick influenced the Government Manual on low cost housing which followed the Act.
