Formerly known as: Red Lion Public House MERCHANTGATE. Public house and outbuildings attached at rear. C15, extended late C16; C17 wing; further rear extensions of C18: mid C19 inn front and C20 fenestration. MATERIALS: timber-framed, much reconstructed, infilling plastered; inn front of painted stucco: ground floor of C17 wing of orange-brown brick in English garden-wall bond: outbuildings and other parts of brick in various bonds. Pantile roofs with brick stacks. EXTERIOR: 2-storey 2-bay front, left bay lower: reconstructed framing on first floor. Inn front framed in squat pilasters on high pedestals, beneath plain cornice: panelled doors at each end flank 1- and 2-light windows with moulded mullions over sill band. One cross window on first floor. Right return: gable wall to left of 2-storey wing of 5 unequal bays: original timber-framing exposed on first floor of wing. Windows on ground floor are squat 1-pane sashes; on first floor, 2-light casements with original blocked window toward right end. All windows are square lattice lights. 1- and 2-storey outbuildings much altered. INTERIOR: not inspected. (City of York: RCHME: The Central Area: HMSO: 1981-: 238).
