YORK SE6052SW STONEGATE 1112-1/27/1044 (North West side) 14/06/54 No.52 GV II* Formerly known as: No.35 STONEGATE. House, now shop, tea room and flat. Late C15, extended in late C17; refronted, raised and extended further in late C19; late C19 shopfront, altered 1964. Timber-framed, now rendered, colour-washed at front, incised at rear; timber shopfront and eaves guttering; pantile roof with brick stack. EXTERIOR: 3-storey 2-bay front, upper floors jettied. Shop has doorcase of reeded pilasters with carved consoles at the head; door of 6 raised and fielded panels beneath radial-glazed fanlight recessed in round-arched panelled architrave. Shop window is of 3 plate glass lights with roller blind in place, over flush panelled reveal. Overall is moulded cornice breaking forward above door. At left end, door of 6 raised and fielded panels in segment-headed opening leads to Church Passage. First floor windows are shallow bows, second floor tripartite sashes, all with 12-pane centre sashes. Boxed guttering. Rear: 3 storeys and attics; two unequal gabled bays, right one with plain bargeboards. C20 fenestration. INTERIOR: RCHM records timber-framing and upper flights of late C17 staircase with bulbous turned balusters, square newels with moulded handrail.
