YORK SE6052SW STONEGATE 1112-1/27/1028 (South East side) 14/06/54 No.33 GV II* Formerly known as: No.22 STONEGATE. House, now shop and offices. Early C17 with late C17 alteration and rear extension; further alteration in late C19. Front and rear plastered, front with applied timbering, rear whitewashed; right return of orange brick in stretcher bond on chamfered brick plinth, rendered in places: pantile roof. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys and attic; single gabled bay to street; all upper floors jettied. Shopfront has glazed and panelled door recessed between 2-light windows with roller blinds: moulded cornice on block brackets above. First and second floor windows are of 5 mullioned and transomed lights, both with decorative leaded lights. Attic window is 2-light casement. Gable bargeboards and timbering on front carved with foliage and Tudor flower ornament, incorporating spurious date '1489' on second floor bressumer: gable has bargeboards finished with pendants and finials. Attached at right end of shopfront is carved devil seated on a scrolled bracket. Right return to Coffee Yard: 6-panel door and overlight in C19 moulded architrave. C20 metal-framed windows, some retaining original flat arches. INTERIOR: front rooms have chamfer-stopped spine beams. Full height staircase rises through house with moulded close string, bulbous balusters, square newels with attached half balusters, pendants and ball finials, and moulded handrail. First floor: 2-panel door to front room. Front room has fireplace in bolection-moulded surround, full height bolection-moulded panelling, with moulded dado rail, and overmantel panel flanked by sunk-panel pilasters: earlier moulded cornice. Second floor: 2-panel doors, one on H-L hinges, to both rooms. Back room has small blocked fireplace in bolection-moulded surround. Attics. Front room has collar truss roof with through purlins; rear room has roof of principal rafter trusses with butt purlins. (City of York: RCHME: The Central Area: HMSO: 1981-: 232).
