Description

SE 5951 SE YORK STATION RISE 1112-1/15/999 North Eastern Railway Company War Memorial 10.9.70 GV II* War memorial. 1922-24. By Sir Edwin Lutyens. Portland stone. Obelisk mounted on slightly canted walls screening three sides of shallow stepped trapezoidal podium bearing alter-shaped Stone of Remembrance. Screen walls terminate in urn finials, laurel swags and wreaths. Pedestal to obelisk carved in relief with laurel wreath enclosing the armorial shields of the North Eastern Railway Company. Screen wall has central dedication panel draped in carved laurel garlands flanked by panels bearing the incised names of 2236 men of the North Eastern Railway Company who lost their lives in the 1914-18 War. Behind the Stone of Remembrance 15 slate panels engraved with the names of those lost in the 1939-45 War are set in the raised pavement.
