Description

YORK SE6051NW SPURRIERGATE 1112-1/28/927 (South West side) 24/06/83 Nos.18-24 (Even) (Formerly Listed as: SPURRIERGATE Nos.4-24 (Even)) GV II Terrace of 4 houses with shops. c1841, with later alteration including later C19 and C20 shopfronts. Painted brick in Flemish bond, No.20 rendered and lined to resemble ashlar; moulded eaves cornice of timber, brick stacks and slate roof. Rear of Nos 18 and 20 of orange-grey brick in English garden wall bond; rear of Nos 22 and 24 rendered. EXTERIOR: 4-storey 7-window front. Rear access passage opening incorporated in shopfronts, between Nos 20 and 22. Nos 22 and 24 have replacement shop windows over marble risers, framed in plain pilasters, frieze with angle blocks carved with Art Nouveau floral motifs, and moulded cornice: at left end, panelled upstairs door and overlight in marble doorcase with moulded cornice. No.18 has one 12-pane sash window with cambered brick arch on all upper floors; No.20 has two 12-pane sashes on first and second floors, and unequal 9-pane sashes on third floor; Nos 22 and 24 have four 1-pane sashes on all floors. Windows to Nos 20, 22 and 24 have grooved wedge lintels with keyblocks. Rear: Nos 18 and 20 have two windows on each floor: 16-pane sashes on ground and first floors, 12-pane sashes on second and third floors, all with sills and segmental arches of soldier brick. Windows to Nos 22 and 24 altered except for two 12-pane sashes with stone sills on second and third floors on No.22. INTERIORS: not inspected.
