Description

YORK SE6051NW SHAMBLES 1112-1/28/1112 (North East side) 14/06/54 No.20 GV II House, now shop. Early C18, with early C19 and C20 alteration; altered C19 shopfront. Orange-brown brick, front in Flemish bond with dressings of orange rubbed and gauged brick, rear in English garden-wall bond; pantile roof, hipped at front, with brick stacks. EXTERIOR: 3-storey 2-window front. Shopfront has small-pane window to left of glazed and panelled door with margin glazed overlight, framed in plain pilasters beneath cornice. First and second floor windows are 12-pane sashes, taller on first floor, with painted stone sills and flat arches. 3-course raised brick bands to first and second floors. Rear: 3 storeys and attic; 2-window gable wall: ground floor concealed behind yard wall. To left of first and second floor windows are 12-pane sashes: blocked opening to right on first floor. Squat 6-pane window to attic. Raised second floor band. INTERIOR: re-arranged staircase from ground floor to attic, extended to basement, retains original column-on-vase balusters, some original, some renewed, plain newels, some with attached half balusters, and moulded close string and handrail. First floor: front room has plain fireplace and moulded cast-iron grate: back room has hob-grate in painted stone surround and 2-panel cupboard door on H-hinges to right. Second floor: two 2-panel doors on H-hinges on landing. Back room has hob-grate with sidepieces decorated with birds, lions and rinceaux. Attic: lime ash floor. Roof underceiled.
