YORK SE5952SE ST MARY'S 1112-1/12/949 (South East side) Nos.1-9 (Consecutive) and attached walls and railings GV II Terrace of 9 houses; now houses, flats, guesthouses and doctors' surgeries. c1860-70 with some later alterations. Brick with painted stone dressings. Slate roof. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys plus attics and cellars. Each house 2 bays, with a sashed canted bay window to the right, of a single storey above a cellar and with a mutuled cornice. The 1st floor windows have a sill band. At the left each house has a pilaster doorcase with mutuled cornice, panelled reveals, a 4-panel door, and an overlight. Nos 1, 2, 5 and 7 have wide flat-roofed C20 attic dormers, and No.8 has a small gabled dormer. All the 1st and 2nd floor windows are glazing bar sashes, except for those to No.2, which are casements. The cellar windows have sashes with wide rectangular panes, except for No.3, which has casements, No.6 which has a renewed window, and No.9 which has a glazing bar sash. The bay windows to Nos 7, 8 and 9 project forwards from brick panels, and the front ground-floor sash of No.8 has been replaced by a casement. The gutters are carried on rectangular timber brackets. Ridge chimneys to right of each house. INTERIORS: not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Nos 4, 5, 7 and 8 have iron area railings on low brick walls with stone copings. This is a very well preserved example of a Victorian terrace. Listing NGR: SE5982452359
