Description

YORK SE6051NE PAVEMENT 1112-1/17/861 (South East side) 14/06/54 Nos.26 AND 28 GV II House, now shops and offices. c1700, incorporating remains of earlier building; early C19 extension; C20 shopfronts. Front of orange brick in Flemish bond at front, rear rendered; timber modillion eaves cornice. Front roof of slate, rear roofs of pantile; brick stacks. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys and attics; 5-bay front, with shallow projecting centre bay. First and second floor windows are 15-pane sashes with painted sills and narrow flat arches of gauged brick. Painted second floor band, and broad frieze band beneath heavy moulded cornice. Attic windows are flat topped dormers with 2x6-pane horizontal sliding sashes. Rear: 3-storey twin-gabled wings, that to right obscured by No.54 Fossgate (qv). Visible windows are 12-pane sashes with cambered brick arches. INTERIOR: not inspected. RCHM records original staircases on upper floors with bulbous turned balusters and close string. A timber post and stud visible on second floor.
