Description

YORK SE5951SE NUNNERY LANE 1112-1/20/813 (North East side) The Moat Hotel GV II St Thomas Hospital, now hotel. Dated 1862. Yellow brick with some stone and painted stone dressings. Slate roof. EXTERIOR: symmetrical, of 2 storeys and 5 bays, with the outer and central bays projecting forwards slightly under shaped gables with copings and ball finials. The windows have chamfered painted lintels sills and mullions, and the lights are sashed with 4 over 4 panes. The outer bays have 2-light windows, and narrow chamfered slit openings in the gables. The 2nd and 4th bays have 3-light windows. The central bay has a 2-light window above a porch, and a plaque within the gable which is inscribed: 'St THOMAS'S HOSPITAL. RE-BUILT A.D. 1862'. The open porch has sides of chamfered brick with painted stone bases, and caps treated as moulded brackets carrying a segmental brick arch with keystone. The porch roof is hipped and slated. The door has 4 recessed panels, and the plain overlight has a segmental top. Ridge chimneys between 1st and 2nd and 4th and 5th bays. The left-hand and right-hand return walls are treated in a similar manner. Each is of 3 bays and has 3-light windows to the outer bays, and a narrow central bay with a shaped gable and 2-light windows. The left-hand return wall has a doorway in its central bay.
