Bank and attached manager's house, now shop. 1839 with late C20 alterations. By JB and W Atkinson for the Yorkshire Agricultural and Commercial Bank. MATERIALS: bank building has rusticated sandstone ground floor with vermiculated quoins and upper floors of ashlar with chamfered quoins; doorcases of marble and other dressings of ashlar; red brick stacks to hipped slate roof. Manager's house of grey-cream mottled brick in Flemish bond with stone dressings patched in render, and moulded eaves cornice; slate roof with brick stack. EXTERIOR: 3-storey 3-window front to Nessgate, with lower 3-storey 3-window range to right. Bank entrance to left is glazed door recessed in pedimented doorcase beneath round-headed overlight. Two windows to right are round-headed fixed lights stepped back in round-arched openings of radiating voussoirs on rusticated pilasters with moulded bases. Moulded impost band continues across window heads as transoms. Window sill band forms band to plinth of defaced rusticated panels. Moulded cornice to ground floor. First floor windows have bracketed cornice hoods, centre one pedimented, 6-pane upper sashes and 1-pane lower sashes. Sill band on moulded consoles is interrupted beneath centre window by mutilated balcony flanked by carved swags. Second floor has squat 6-pane sashes in raised lobed surrounds. Moulded eaves frieze and bold cornice on heavy consoles. Ground floor openings in range to right altered to tall fixed windows beneath shallow cornice on plain pilasters with moulded imposts. First floor windows repeat those of Bank front, and second floor windows are unequal 9-pane sashes with stone sills, all with flat arches of brick. Moulded eaves cornice beneath low parapet. Bank front to High Ousegate repeats that to Nessgate. INTERIOR: not inspected. (City of York: RCHME: The Central Area: HMSO: 1981-: 167).
