Description

YORK SE5951NE MICKLEGATE 1112-1/15/672 (North side) 19/08/71 Nos.94 AND 96 The Falcon Inn (No.94) GV II House and public house, now public house and shop. c1842 with later alteration. Painted brick, with painted stone plinth to No.94; timber cornice with minimal modillions to slate roof, with two brick stacks. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys and attics; 3-window front. No.94 has 6-panel door and divided overlight in plain doorcase with eared architrave and moulded cornice hood on scroll consoles. To right, wide 3-light window beneath plain fascia board. On first floor inserted square bay window with 4-pane centre sash and moulded cornice breaks painted stone sill band. No.96 has shopfront with cornice on carved brackets, replacement plate glass window and glazed door. On first floor two 12-pane sashes with slender glazing bars, each with painted stone sill band and recessed panel below. On second floor, both houses have 12-pane sashes with painted stone sills; unequal 9-pane sashes to attic. First and second floor windows except inserted bay have cambered heads and flat arches, those on second floor partly masked by prominent cornice on grooved brackets. To right of bay window is a gilded carving of a Falcon, said to survive from a previous inn of the same name on the site. INTERIORS: not inspected. In No.94, traditional dram shop arrangement with through passage and servery said to survive intact. No.96 winder staircase visible through shop window, with open strings, shaped treadends, slender turned balusters and moulded handrail wreathed at foot around turned newel.
