Description

YORK SE5952SE MARYGATE 1112-1/12/630 (North West side) 19/08/71 No.62 St Mary's Cottage GV II House. Late C18 with early C19 alteration: extended into No.60 Marygate (qv) in C20. Orange-brown brick in Flemish bond; timber doorcase and guttering on paired block brackets; pantile roof with brick stacks. Central entrance hall plan. EXTERIOR: 2-storey 3-window front. Doorcase of reeded pilasters and flat cornice hood on elongated reeded brackets: 3 steps up to deeply recessed glazed and panelled door with radial fanlight in round-arched architrave with fluted transom. Flanking windows are 16-pane sashes. Similar windows on first floor flank re-painted blind 12-pane window. All windows have flat arches of rubbed brick. Left return: 12-pane staircase sash window with cambered arch of orange rubbed brick on first floor. In gable apex, defaced datestone. INTERIOR: ground floor: entrance hall and left room have coved cornices: right room has reeded cornice. Round-arched opening at foot of straight staircase with ramped-up handrail: balusters on first floor landing are concave sided stick type. First floor: both bedrooms have fireplaces in plain surrounds with moulded mantelshelves; one has hob grate with guilloche-type mouldings; the other later C19 round-headed grate.
