Formerly known as: No.38 LOW PETERGATE. House, now shop. Early C17, refronted mid C18; altered C19 shopfront; renovated c1990. Timber-framed, refaced in orange-grey brick in Flemish bond, rendered at rear; dentilled modillioned moulded timber cornice; pantile roof with rendered brick stack. EXTERIOR: 4-storey 3-bay front. Shopfront framed in sunk-panel pilasters with paterae at their heads, panelled fascia and cornice: plate glass window over sunk-panel riser flanked by 6-panel doors, raised and fielded at left end, moulded at right end. First and second floor windows are 12-pane sashes with painted stone sill bands. Third floor windows are squat 6-pane sashes with painted stone sills, outer ones blind, flanking original attic window in gable end. All windows have flat arches of orange gauged brick. Rear: gabled wing at rear of front block has external stack supporting bank of 4 diagonally set chimney flues. Windows are C20 replacements except for one 2x6-pane Yorkshire sash in attic. Front block has cogged brick eaves course. INTERIOR: ground floor: massive panelled beams exposed in front room. Fine staircase with close string, heavy bulbous balusters and moulded handrail, and panelled newels with shaped finials rises through full height of house. First floor: partition wall with studs of flimsy scantling to front room. Front room has dentilled modillion cornice. Original C19 lettered shop window preserved on display on first floor landing.
