YORK SE6051NW KING'S SQUARE 1112-1/28/520 (South East side) 14/06/54 Nos.3, 4 AND 4A St Trinity House (Formerly Listed as: SHAMBLES No.1) (Formerly Listed as: COLLIERGATE Nos.1 AND 2) GV II Four buildings now combined as offices. C20 remodelling of three C15 or earlier structures, one altered in C17, two rebuilt in early C18; one C20 structure. C15 structures timber-framed; all parts now faced in orange brick in English garden-wall or random bond; first floor of right end building rendered. Pantile roofs. EXTERIOR: 2 storey 1-bay fronts, except 4, which has 3 storeys and attic; first floor of right end building jettied. Windows include small-pane bow and bay windows on ground floor, and 3x12-pane Yorkshire sash in end building. On first floor, 4-pane sashes, 16-pane sash and 3x6-pane casement; 4 has 3-light casements. Right end building originally jettied on adjacent fronts retains dragon post at corner. INTERIOR: vestigial timber-framing survives in all C15 structures. Right end building has dragon beam and joists for jettied first floor, and fireplace with chamfered timber lintel beneath later moulded timber mantelshelf. Adjacent building to left retains chamfered beam and joists for inserted first floor in former hall. Left end building formerly listed with Nos 1 and 2 Colliergate (19/08/71): right end building formerly listed with No.1 The Shambles. Right end building occupies an important position in the streetscape at the corner of The Shambles.
