Description

YORK SE55SE HOLGATE ROAD 1112-1/1/502 (South side) 24/06/83 Nos.167 AND 167A GV II House, now doctors' surgery. Mid/late C18 with late C19 alterations. Brick in Flemish bond with some painted stone dressings. Concrete tile roof. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys plus attic. 5 bays. On the 1st floor there are glazing bar sash windows with rubbed brick flat arches. On the ground floor there are brick projections to left and right of the central doorway, under a lean-to roof. Each side has a sashed canted brick bay window with painted stone lintels and sills and a hipped roof. Near the centre of the roof there is an attic dormer which has a shallow-pitched roof and a horizontal glazing bar sash. The doorway, now recessed between C19 additions, has a doorcase with fluted Doric pilasters, a frieze with swags and festoons, and a moulded dentilled pediment. The door has 6 panels and a plain rectangular overlight. Modillion gutter cornice, with a lead rainwater hopper to the right of the 2nd bay. The gables are coped. 2 axial ridge chimneys. The left-hand return gable wall is of 2 bays and includes a late C19 timber canted oriel at 1st floor level to the right. It is supported on elaborate brackets, is sashed with moulded mullions, and has a dentilled modillion cornice and a hipped slate roof. INTERIOR: not inspected.
