Description

YORK SE55SE HOLGATE ROAD 1112-1/1/503 (North East side) 09/03/94 No.168 The Fox Inn GV II Public house. 1878, restored 1985. Brick in Flemish bond. Plain tile roof. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and 3 bays. To each side of the outer bays and around the windows bricks project slightly to give a quoined effect. The window surrounds have roll-moulded edges and segmental heads. The upper sashes are divided into small panes (6 wide by 5 deep). On the 1st floor the lower sashes have a single vertical division and on the ground floor they have embossed glass. To the left of the left-hand window on the ground floor there is an area of rebuilt brickwork, and a divided 6-panel door with overlight. Formerly the entrance to the 'Jug and Bottle', this doorway now serves no function - its opening is blocked internally and cannot be detected. Above the central bay there is a gable with a stone coping and finial, with volutes to left and right. A central panel is inscribed: 'THE FOX INN REBUILT 1878'. It has an architrave with a carved brick border. Above, there is a small round window. The brick porch has an outer doorway with a semicircular brick arch, a plain overlight and an impost band. The gable is treated as an open pediment. It has a finial, and within the pediment there is a carved figure of a fox. The verges project at the eaves and the gable chimneys have moulded cornices. INTERIOR: the original compartmented interior and servery arrangement survive with original fittings including bar, benches, fireplaces and wooden staircase. (Dissertation for MA in Architectural Building Conservation: Davison Andrew P: "A Good House, fit for the purpose: Public House Design in York": De Montfort University: 1993-: 62-3).
