YORK SE6052SW HIGH PETERGATE 1112-1/27/469 (South West side) 14/06/54 Nos.31 AND 31A GV II Formerly known as: Nos.27 AND 28 HIGH PETERGATE. Includes: No.52A STONEGATE. Offices and flat. Front range C16, C15 range behind and early C17 rear block amalgamated mid C19; altered mid C19 shopfront and C20 extension at rear, accessed from Stonegate. MATERIALS: all parts timber-framed: stucco front on painted stone plinth, with timber shopfront and moulded cornice; elsewhere is brick, red-brown in English garden-wall bond at rear, incised render in places. Plain tile roof at front, pantile and slate at rear; brick stack. EXTERIOR: 2-storey 2-bay front, first floor jettied. Shopfront framed in sunk-panel pilasters beneath dentilled cornice on grooved consoles, 4 of which support urns. Central glazed and panelled door and plain fanlight between shallow 3-light elliptical bow windows over sunk panel risers: recessed doors at each end converted to plate glass windows. At left of first floor is 3-light canted bay window with 1-pane sashes framed in pilasters as to shopfront: to right, two windows are double glazed with 1-pane sashes at front, 2-light casements behind. Windows have moulded architraves and painted stone sills. Rear block: 2 storeys and attic; 1-bay. First floor has paired sash windows, one of 12 panes, one of 16 panes; second floor, one small-pane fixed light. INTERIOR: of front and middle ranges. Ground floor: quarter turn staircase to first floor has close string, slender turned balusters, square newels with attached half-balusters and moulded ramped-up handrail: below stairs, 3-panel door on H-L hinges leads to cellar stairs. In rooms to right, small cast-iron corner fireplace and chamfered brick fireplace survive. First floor: front left room has C19 marble fireplace; front right room fitted with square dado panelling, retains half-glazed door to alcove cupboard; rear left room has moulded dado rail and 6-panel door on L-hinges. In middle range, two 3 fielded panel doors survive; mutilated crown post truss visible in end gable wall. Interior of rear block: first floor room has early C19 fireplace; second floor room lined with C17 run-through panelling. (City of York: RCHME: The Central Area: HMSO: 1981-: 186).
