Description

A single trench in the raised courtyard area at the rear of the Chapel revealed that deep intact stratified archaeological deposits survived up to the levels of the early 19th century. Excavation to a depth of 1.5m reached deposits dating from the 16th/17th centuries. Five phases of activity were identified including destruction deposits relating to a timber-framed building (phase I). Subsequent phases consisted of a brick/cobble/limestone surface (phase II); layers representing dumps with intercutting pits (phase III); a brick building (phase IV); and 19th and 20th century activity (phase V). RCHME microfilm PRN: 2913.
