Description

A watching brief was conducted in October and November of 1998 during refurbishment works on this particular site. In all four trenches were dug. Trench 1 consisted of a hand dug test pit which penetrated to a depth of 1.1 metres but was found to be modern deposits associated with previous demolition on site. Trench 2 saw the top 1 metre of deposits to be similar in composition to that of trench 1, however below that level the deposits were found to be dated to that of the 12-13th centuries with some layers being very organic in nature possibly indicating areas of waste disposal which was domestic in nature. Trench 3 and 4 saw only modern deposits and nothing of archaeological interest was noted.
