Description

A total of 8 boreholes and three trenches were excavated on this site. Within all of the boreholes well preserved organic deposits were encountered, this was found to be the case as well in one of the excavated trenches. The dating evidence from this site suggested that it had been occupied extensively from the Roman period through to Medieval times. The finds also indicated to the excavator that extensive Roman buildings once stood in the vicinity of this site, this was summized by the fact that painted wall plaster and ceramic building material was recovered. The boreholes are particularly worthy of note as they produced evidence for the natural terraces of the River Ouse and also a hitherto unknown valley along the north western side of the site which indicated that a small tributary stream ran down into the Ouse.
