Description

A watching brief was conducted at the above property whilst a new drainage pipe was installed. By the time the York Archaeological Trust had arrived on site most of the work had been completed. However the section which ran through the north western wall was observed during the installation. After the removal of the modern concrete floor an earlier floor consisiting of brick and tile was observed. This floor was thought to date to the 15th or 16th century due to the size of the brick used. However this floor was thought to have been reused in this location and given an 18th century date due to finding of bricks and tiles typical of this date. Although nothing of a greater age was found the contractor did think that the original Medieval floor might survive at a greater depth because the findings suggest that the later 18th century floor was typical of the expected build up of floor levels during a buildings life.
