Description

geophysical survey In advance of the construction of a plinth for a statue of Constantine. The contractor was instructed by the Dean and Chapter to archaeologically investigate the area for the proposed construction work. This was done primarily because of a known sub surface brick culvert which needed to be located as there was concern about the statue’s plinth possibly causing subsidence if it were laid directly over this buried structure. To this end a geo-physical survey was conducted and the foundation for the statue’s plinth raft was excavated archaeologically. The results of the investigation revealed that no archaeological deposits were disturbed or defined by this work and the brick culvert was successfully uncovered and reinforced to prevent its collapse and therefore any danger of subsidence to the statues plinth.
