Description

EXCAVATION Excavation of foundation trenches prior to development. Overlying natural clay was brown clay levelling up to 0.8m thick, sloping down to east and north-east - a revetment, edge of localised terrace? Several pits and traces of cobble and limestone slab surfaces (2nd century?). A more substantial building comprising beamslots and posthole alignments, succeeded the earlier building. The revetment was robbed in the 8th-11th century. Following this was a hearth; a pit and stakeholes (late medieval?); Friends' burials (18th-19th century). Interim : bulletin of the York Archaeological Trust 1.2/1973/37-38
