Description

This watching brief was undertaken during the excavation for a cable trench, close to the Clifton street frontage. Although the trench was only 0.50m wide it revealed an irregular cobbled surface at a depth of less than 0.50m below the modern ground surface. The limitations imposed by the width of the trench make interpretation difficult, but this surface may be a version of Roman Road 6. In addition to pottery and coins dating to the Roman period a small assemblage of Anglian pottery was also recovered from this investigation.
