Description

WATCHING BRIEF Watching brief during excavations to underpin a boundary wall in the alleyway leading to Peter Lane. Three trenches were monitored down to c.4.5m bgl. A possible collapsed Roman building was noted in trench 1, the possible footings of a large Roman building was noted in trench 2 demolished by the 5th century, and in trench 3 further evidence of Roman buildings. It was not possible to link the stratification in the three trenches. Immediately above the Roman levels was a layer of peaty silt with a radiocarbon date of 460-650 cal AD this was overlain by structured peats of 9th-10th century date associated with fence lines. The fence lines were continous across the trenches. No evidence of Anglian structures were recorded.
