Description

preliminary notes on the archaeological implications of proposed development A desktop assessment of this site revealed this site to be close to the eastern boundary of Medieval York in an area which was largely open fields until the 18th century. It was further revealed that this site lay astride a Roman road leading eastward from the city to Brough on Humber. Due to the fact that no previous archaeological work has been carried out on this site and the presence of the known Roman road, the presence of a cemetery cannot be ruled out. This taken together with the fact that this section of the Roman road is thought to be well preserved has meant that this site is potentially very sensitive archaeologically. The Contractor recommends that, before planning permission being granted, this site will require extensive and intrusive archaeological evaluation.
