Description

The site in the medieval period was outside of the city walls, with the road to Hull to the north and The parish church of St Lawrence to the east. The earliest cartographic evidence, dating to 1736, shows no buildings or features on the site. The flax mill to the west dates from the early nineteenth century, and other buildings on Lawrence Street date from the Post-medieval period. The 1845 First Edition Ordnance Survey Map shows buildings along the Lawrence Street frontage, which expanding to cover the site by 1909 Edition Ordnance Survey Map. The Archaeological Evaluation Trial Trenches have shown nineteenth and twentieth century deposits, features and structures were found in all six trenches. No archaeological features predating the nineteenth century were found in Trench 2. A Linear feature in Evaluation Trench 4 was both wide and deep, and may relate to civil war earthworks. A cobble deposit in Evaluation Trench 6 may relate to a cobble surface. There were Medieval Pits in Trenches 1, 3, 5 and 6. Two medieval linear features were found in Trenches 3 and 6. The only late Medieval finds were from the Pit in Trench 1. The medieval Features in Trenches 3, 5 and 6 were all early in date. No burials or features relating to the Church of St. Lawrence was found. Residual Roman Pottery and Anglo-Scandinavian Pottery found in Trenches 3 and 6 suggest a background of earlier activity in the vicinity.
