PROJECT DETAILS An Archaeological Evaluation was undertaken by MAP Archaeological Consultancy Ltd in the interior of Foxton's Garage, Leeman Road, York, during March and April 2000 The evaluation consisted of two trenches (Trenches 7 and 9). Trench 7 had previously been excavated to a depth of 7.90m AOD by the York Archaeological Trust in 1998. The re-excavation located a sequence of riverine silt/flood deposits and natural deposits at a depth of approximately 5.85m AOD. These deposits were truncated by a series of medieval pits. The medieval pits were sealed by a former topsoil and turf line that represented the early 19th century land surface. The former land surface was situated at a height of 7.00m- 7.46m AOD and was sealed by 19th century dump deposits. Trench 9 was located in the north-western corner of the building, and was excavated to a depth of 4.90m AOD. Excavation recorded several layers of riverine silt/flood deposits, the 19th century land surface at 7.14m AOD and a considerable depth of 19th century dump deposits.
