Description

This document presents an assessment of Shipton Street School undertaken by the Historic Buildings Section of Field Archaeology Specialists Ltd. The work was carried out at the beginning of 2007 to inform the design process and to assess the significance of the buildings as part of an application for planning permission and listed building consent. The school was designed by noted York architect Walter Brierley and the earliest section of the building was constructed in 1890 for the York School Board. Sited in an expanding suburban area, the school experienced significant problems with overcrowding and the original, symmetrical building was extended twice in the early 20th century; between 1895 and 1909 and again between 1931 and 1936. Both these phases of work were designed to blend in with the original building, creating a cohesive building fronting onto Shipton Street. Further extensions were added to the south of the building in the later 20th century, in a modern style unsympathetic to the original building. The detached nursery building was also extensively altered internally. The school closed in 2002 and the building is currently unoccupied. It was listed in 2003, in response to planning applications on the site.
