Description
Between 30th June and 26th July 2010 York Archaeological Trust undertook a watching brief on works on the City Walls, Lord Mayor’s Walk. The work involved the insertion of tie-bars to bind the exterior of the wall to the interior wall walk retaining wall and thus stabilising the whole structure.
To insert the tie-bars the surface of the wall walk was lifted at intervals and small trenches, typically measuring 0.85 x 0.4x 0.2m, dug across the walkway to fit the tie-bars. These trenches, a total of 76, were nominally c.2m apart, centre to centre, although in practice the distance varied from c.1.3m to 2.7m. These were usually dug in batches of c.12 and once dug were recorded using measured sketches, written notes and colour digital photographs. This report covers one phase of archaeological work on this section of the City Walls the others being an archaeological evaluation of
six spots along the exterior base of the existing wall (SYO1281 EYO4479) and a programme of updating photogrammetric drawings of the interior and exterior wall elevations. Detailed location drawings for the tie-bar trenches have been compiled by Mark Whitelock, Senior Engineer, City of York Council and will be transferred to City of York Archives. The numbering sequence follows on from the evaluation (EYO4479).
