Description

The watching brief demonstrated that remains of the curtain wall of the legionary fortress and interval tower SW4 survived immediately below the modern ground surface to the rear of the building. No evidence of burials was uncovered, and it was suggested that the fortress wall, which may have survived as a topographical feature well into the medieval period, may have formed the southern boundary of the burial ground of St Wilfrid's Church.
