Description

In August 2011 York Archaeological Trust undertook an archaeological evaluation at the Lendal Cellars, Lendal, York. Four trenches were excavated to a depth of 1m below the existing ground level. A small number of buried walls were located and recorded but all appeared to be post-medieval in date and did not seem to be part of the Augustinian friary known to occupy the site from at least the later 13th century until its dissolution in 1538. Extensive evidence for 19th and 20th century levelling deposits was recovered from this evaluation.
