This document presents a Project Design for undertaking the final phase of a staged programme of archaeological investigation and mitigation, as part of the construction of a new water pipeline between Marton, North Yorkshire and Acomb Landing, York. A desk-based archaeological appraisal of the proposed pipeline route identified that much of the route lay alongside a Roman road. The appraisal was followed by sample geophysical survey in ten areas along the route to identify whether any evidence of the Roman roads or associated settlement or field systems was present and also to characterise the landscape through which the pipeline is routed. Further geophysical survey was then undertaken in five areas following analysis of the initial results supplemented by information from a route walkover survey This project design sets out the proposals for the excavation in advance of groundworks of two areas where archaeological remains identified from geophysical survey would be impacted upon by the scheme, one to the northeast of near Whixley, and the other to the north-east of Kirk Hammerton. In addition, a survey would also be undertaken in advance of excavation of an area of irregular earthworks at the latter site. Archaeological monitoring of soilstripping would be undertaken on the remainder of the pipeline corridor.
