Description
Archaeological Services WYAS (ASWYAS) was commissioned by Farrar Bamforth Associates Ltd to undertake an archaeological desk-based assessment of land at 31 Bootham, York. The assessment was undertaken in advance of the proposed redevelopment of the site,
and has been carried out to a specification agreed by John Oxley, the York City Council
Principal Archaeologist.
The purpose of the desk-based assessment is to identify and assess the significance of sites,
buildings and finds of archaeological and historic interest within the proposed development
site and the wider study area, and to gain a greater understanding of the historical landscape
as a whole.
The proposed development site is situated at the corner of Bootham and Bootham Row, on
the site of the former Charlie Brown Garage, to the immediate north-west of the historic
centre of York, centred at SE 6005 5234 (Figs 1 and 2). It consists of a late 20th century
garage set back from Bootham by a tarmac forecourt, with a large shed to the rear and a
number of 19th century buildings which front onto Bootham Row (see Plates 1 to 3).
The underlying geology comprises Permian and Triassic Sandstone (BGS 2001). Bootham
itself lies on a ridge of moraine and the natural ground level slopes down to the north.
This assessment has collated information on all known archaeological investigations within a
250m radius of the site, excluding areas which lie within the city walls to the west of the
proposed development site. Information has also been collated on all Listed Buildings within
a 100m radius of the site.
