Description
EXCAVATION
St. Maurice's/Newbiggin, Lord Mayor's Walk
From Interim: Concurrent with the excavations at Union Terrace, work was under way at the opposite end of Lord Mayor's Walk where, just outside Monk Bar,
traces of Roman activity were again discovered in the form of cobbled areas of second or third century date. A number of Dark Age pits came to light above this level, but it was found that all traces of the twelfth century church dedicated to St Maurice had been destroyed by its Victorian successor. There did survive some evidence of the Norman suburb of Newbiggin however, sealed under a thicker layer of mixed clay and soil laid down in the thirteenth century and probably derived from the digging or cleaning of the nearby city ditch. Over this deposit a number of thirteenth and fourteenth century buildings with associated latrines, cesspits and rubbish pits were found, forming a street front on the alignment of Lord Mayor's Walk.
