Description
2m x 2m trench in lawn outside museum to depth 1.2m. Excavation followed geophysical survey and was carried out to support an installation by IBM. The trench was lined with tarpaulin and filled with hardcore to support IBM pavillion.
A robbed cobble and mortar foundation connected with the cloister walk or the western range of buildings was encountered. This part of the layout of St Mary's Abbey was found to be sealed by substantial layers of 19th century levelling deposits which were approximately 0.90m deep.
