Description
Between 26th October and 31st October York Archaeological Trust undertook an archaeological
watching brief at St Mary’s Church, Castlegate, York. This was to observe the excavation of
a small trench dug around the southern side of the church to accommodate a power cable for
a new floodlighting system.
Moderate, locally frequent, amounts of disarticulated human bone were noted during the
digging of the trench but the looseness and mixed nature of the deposits encountered made
it clear that all the bone had been redeposited and was unstratified. No deposits of any great
archaeological significance were noted, but a buried chamfered plinth belonging to the south
wall of the church was noted close to and west of the porch.
